Stars are being created every second-- but how fast are they destroyed?

Someone pointed out to me last night that stars are being created at a certain rate too-- after I cited a National Geographic article that said stars are going super nova once a second. We wondered if the rate of creation of stars is greater or less than the destruction of stars. Good question. I'll look into it.

Looks like one theory says that the matter from supernovas goes into new star formation-- so then the question becomes-- are the number of stars generally in equilibrium? [Google search on [supernovas + 'star formation] Other links here refer to new stars from dark matter. I'm not a fan of dark matter theory.

I read a book in 1995 called The Big Bang NEver Happened-- proposing just as it said. The theory of star formation in that book by Lerner refers to the electric universe-- that matter is charged and coagulates-- forming stars. I like that idea a lot.

So if the amount of energy is convertible to matter and vice versa, and if the universe is a steady state system with no big bang, it may be that the number of stars is fixed... with a new one created for every one that self destructs.
